'Glass and Lasers' – Mink Freud (SBA #007)

See Blue Audio is pleased to welcome Mink Freud to the label for its seventh release. ‘Glass and Lasers’ is the first in a series of new recordings from the north Londoner, and a welcome return for an artist who hasn’t released in a while. This doesn’t mean she hasn’t been busy writing and making music, of course, and ‘Glass and Lasers’ is indicative of a subtle and graceful change in direction.

The name of Mink Freud gained attention with the release of her debut album, ‘Gelatinous’, on Domestic Records in 2011. Its nine tracks were rich in texture and changing moods, ranging from lo-fi beats to ambient soundscapes, and ‘Gelatinous’ was favourably reviewed on The Quietus website. The cinematic quality of her work also led to collaborations with the visual artist Lazyoptics.

‘Glass and Lasers’ retains much of the original Mink Freud sound, but it has morphed into something different, perhaps reflecting the changing world the artist sees around her. Cascading chime-like beats, natural and supernatural effects, droplets of sound; over eight minutes of sonic reflection that ebb and flow. In keeping with her eclectic and wide-ranging tastes, as well as the impact of living in the huge metropolis that is London, traces of grime and other city-based influences can also be heard.

'Glass and Lasers' is simultaneously alluring and enigmatic, and it deserves to be released as a standalone track. Next up from Mink Freud on See Blue Audio is the 'In Isolation' EP, which includes the shadowy ambience of 'Hawksmoor'.
